In their latest Adobe PDF Library update, Datalogics has added extensive support for PDF/X-6, via a new value added to the APDFL processor.

The PDF/X standard (ISO 15930) ensures that PDFs capture sufficient information so that they can be printed correctly to the capabilities of the output device. A printer capable of using custom inks may not print a PDF exactly the same as a printer that can only use the CMYK process colors.

PDF/X-6 (ISO1530-9) is the latest evolution of this standard; it is a specific standard for the creation and exchange of print-ready PDF files in the graphic arts industry. It’s an extension of the PDF/X family of standards and is designed to ensure the reliability and accuracy of printing processes. PDF/X-6 is based on the PDF 2.0 specification, which provides advanced features and enhancements compared to previous versions of PDF. It supports transparency, layers, OpenType fonts, and ICC color profiles, among other features.

The main goal of PDF/X-6 is to maintain color accuracy and consistency throughout the printing workflow. It ensures that the colors in the PDF file are preserved when transferred from one device or software to another, allowing for predictable and reliable printing results.

PDF/X-6 also allows for including live transparency effects, such as drop shadows or transparencies created in graphic design software. These effects are flattened during the PDF creation process to ensure consistent rendering on different devices.

Another significant feature of PDF/X-6 is its support for variable data printing (VDP), which allows for customized printed documents with personalized information, such as names or addresses. This feature is particularly useful for applications like direct mail marketing or personalized brochures.

In sum, PDF/X-6 is an evolutionary continuation of a standard intended to help the print industry capture the data necessary for print reproductions of digital documents updated to the latest version of PDF. Datalogics is excited to be able to now offer this support for their customers using the Adobe PDF Library.
