LinkID

Produced by Link Genetic GmbH

LinkID is a persistent identifier infrastructure designed to create durable, resolvable hyperlinks for documents, web resources, and digital knowledge systems.

Traditional hyperlinks often degrade over time due to link rot and content drift. As documents and websites evolve, references break or point to altered content, undermining the reliability of digital knowledge.

LinkID addresses this challenge by introducing a persistent identifier layer between the source and the destination of a hyperlink.

Instead of linking directly to a location-based URL, a LinkID acts as a stable reference that resolves to the current location of a resource. This allows organizations to maintain reliable references even when underlying content locations change.

Key capabilities include:

  • Persistent identifiers for web and document references
  • Resolver infrastructure for durable hyperlink resolution
  • Decoupling of reference identity from resource location
  • Integration with document ecosystems such as PDF repositories
  • Support for long-term digital preservation workflows

LinkID can be embedded into digital documents, including PDF files, enabling future-proof references that remain valid over time.

The system is designed for publishers, archives, research institutions, government organizations, and enterprises managing long-lived digital content.

LinkID is part of the Link Genetic platform, which focuses on improving the resilience and longevity of hyperlinks across the web and document ecosystems.

LinkID follows the principle of persistent identifiers similar to DOI systems, but is designed to work across the broader web and document ecosystems.
