Building automated document pipelines often requires connecting file repositories, messaging platforms, and backend business logic. For teams using n8n to construct visual, low-code automations, processing PDF files previously meant dropping into custom code nodes to construct manual API payloads and handle multipart form data.
To simplify these implementations, pdfRest has launched official open-source community nodes for n8n, now published on npm. This integration brings the complete pdfRest API toolkit directly to the n8n canvas, enabling developers to drag and drop PDF conversion, security, compression, and extraction tasks into their automated workflows.
Native PDF Processing on the Canvas
Powered by the underlying Adobe PDF Library engine, the new nodes provide native actions for over 40 pdfRest API operations. Instead of maintaining custom script blocks, developers can select operations directly from the node configuration panel.
- Core Operations: Convert files to and from PDF, compress file sizes, run OCR text recognition, extract form data, apply digital signatures, and redact sensitive information.
- Flexible Endpoint Support: Configure credentials once to route processing requests through pdfRest Cloud in the US or EU regions, or connect directly to a self-hosted Container deployment.
- Easy Installation: Self-hosted n8n instances can install the package directly by navigating to Settings > Community Nodes and entering
@pdfrest/n8n-nodes-pdfrest.

Pre-Built Workflows for Fast Deployment
To help development teams accelerate implementation, pdfRest has published a suite of ready-to-import template workflows combining PDF operations with popular cloud services:
- Automated File Compression: Automatically compress oversized documents uploaded to cloud storage and log storage savings. Learn how to compress Google Drive PDFs in n8n.
- Intelligent Document Intake: Route incoming email attachments through OCR and classification models to automatically index and store files. Explore the template to classify and file email PDF documents with Gmail, pdfRest, Drive, and Claude.
- Document Assembly and Conversion: Convert Office documents upon upload, merge multiple PDF files within a directory, or transform PDFs into Markdown for downstream content pipelines.
Every workflow template includes canvas setup notes and configuration placeholders, allowing developers to import, authenticate, and launch automated document pipelines in minutes.
Getting Started
Adding PDF processing to your n8n environment takes only a few minutes. Install the package from Settings > Community Nodes on your self-hosted n8n instance, enter your pdfRest API key or Container URL, and start building. To view source code, report issues, or contribute to the package, review the repository details on npm.
