Timeline of the history of PDF poster.

At PDF Days Europe 2025, one of the most striking and conversation-starting exhibits wasn’t a live demo or a new product — it was a poster.

Stretching across the decades, the Milestones in the History of PDF poster (PDF) visualized the over thirty years of innovation and standardization that made PDF what it is today: the world’s most enduring and versatile digital document format.

Beyond Adobe and ISO publications, what is not well known are the many other contributions, collaborations, and significant events that served to form PDF. The Milestones in the History of PDF poster was designed so as to allow other voices to be recorded, and to allow PDF Days attendees to reflect on how various milestones collectively defined the modern digital document experience. To this end, attendees were asked to add a PostIt Note to the poster listing their own personal milestone(s) in their journey with PDF.

Featured on the cover of Deutscher Druker magazine, it turns out that people (ok, maybe industry people) want this poster! And so, we are now making it available to the general public.

A Visual History of Digital Documents

The timeline begins with Dr. John Warnock’s 1991 “Camelot Project”; the idea that a given document could look the same on every screen and printer. From there, the poster charts a steady progression: the first public release of PDF 1.0 in 1993, the early Adobe specifications that laid the groundwork for modern publishing, and the parallel development of foundational digital standards such as Unicode, JPEG, and HTML.

From Proprietary Innovation to Global Standard

One of the central themes captured by the poster is PDF’s transition from proprietary format to open, internationally governed standard. A key milestone is Adobe’s 2007 transfer of PDF 1.7 to ISO, culminating in ISO 32000-1:2008 - the first international standard for core PDF. That moment transformed PDF from a proprietary (if published) technology into an open platform and a foundation for global interoperability.

By visually connecting Adobe’s internal development milestones with the ISO standards that followed. the timeline underscores the role of international collaboration. Each marker testifies to the efforts of experts across industries and from around the globe.

A Living Ecosystem

Beyond the specifications themselves, the timeline also celebrates the ecosystem that supports PDF. Visitors at the poster often paused at the PDF Association’s milestones: its founding in 2006, the publication of the Matterhorn Protocol, Tagged PDF Best Practice Guide, and new specifications such as WTPDF (2024) and EA-PDF (2025).

These efforts reflect the ongoing work of the PDF community to ensure that the format evolves in step with modern needs and applications. The latest entries, including ISO/TS 32007:2024 (glTF for PDF 2.0), ISO 14289-2:2024 (PDF/UA-2), and ISO/TS 32004:2024 (Integrity Protection for PDF 2.0) point to a future where PDF remains central to secure, accessible, and intelligent digital communication.

A Symbol of Continuity and Collaboration

At PDF Days Europe 2025, the poster served not only as a historical record but as a symbol of continuity and collaboration. Participants from software companies, government agencies, and research institutions found themselves tracing the lines from early Adobe technical notes to the most recent ISO Technical Specifications. The shared sense of pride and stewardship was palpable.

As one attendee said: “Every item on this chart represents a conversation—an agreement about how the world should preserve and share information.”

Looking Ahead

The final section of the poster reads simply: “The Future of PDF…” It’s an open invitation—to developers, standards experts, and everyday users—to continue shaping the format’s evolution. At PDF Days Europe 2025, surrounded by decades of progress mapped out with paper and ink, that future felt both tangible and inspiring: a reminder that the story of PDF is still being written.
