The Swiss non-profit foundation “Access for all” has published the PDF Accessibility Checker (PAC 2) the world’s first tool for verifying PDF documents conform with PDF/UA and are accessible to people with disabilities. The PDF Association contributed significantly to the development of PAC 2 in several ways. With these and other initiatives, the PDF Association underlines its commitment to universal accessibility in PDF, the world’s preferred format for electronic documents.

To promote awareness of PDF/UA, the forthcoming ISO Standard for accessible PDF, the PDF Association has partnered with the non-profit-organisation Access for All to solicit its members and others to join in helping the Australian non-profit NV Access enhance their popular open source NVDA screen reader to become the first assistive technology to conform to an ISO standard for accessibility.

The December 2011 ANPRM asserts “…it is straightforward to apply the WCAG 2.0 Success Criteria and Conformance Requirements to all electronic content.” NetCentric’s Duff Johnson, chair of the US Committee for PDF/UA, contests this claim, provides examples to show PDF/UA’s importance when considering PDF accessibility and argues for specific regulatory language that makes it clear to developers and evaluators alike that PDF accessibility must be assessed in specific technical terms.

The twice-annual PDF Standards Week for the winter of 2011-2012 was hosted by Microsoft in their Bravern facility in Bellevue, Washington during the first week of December, 2011. Present to conduct the meetings were delegates from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, the UK and the US. This article summarizes developments in Bellevue.
