An International Standard for Personalized Print

In August 2010, following 3 years of global collaboration by industry leaders, the International Standards Organization published PDF/VT, a.k.a. ISO 16612-2.

PDF/VT is built on the PDF imaging model, widely recognized as the richest and most robust in the graphics industry. Optimized for the specific needs of Variable (“V”) and Transactional (“T”) workflows, PDF/VT efficiently addresses the requirements of modern Variable Data Printing (VDP), bringing all the well-known advantages of PDF workflow to the world of personalized print.

PDF/VT uniquely satisfies the industry’s desire for complete job portability, page independence and device neutrality. The standard opens up new opportunities in digital printing by decoupling the complexities of VDP job authoring from the particular methods of print production. By simplifying the process, PDF/VT will yield benefits for all stakeholders: enterprises, marketers, designers and print professionals.

A leaflet about PDF/VT and about its relevance for personalized print can be downloaded here.

PDF/VT Application Notes (Final Version) can be downloaded here.

Full Speed Ahead: how to make variable data PDF files that won’t slow your digital press (a free download)

This concise guide provides objective information and advice to anyone with a stake in VDP: graphic designers, print buyers, production managers, press operators, owners of PSPs, and digital press DFE developers and users of composition tools, showing how, when they all work together, VDP jobs will fly through digital presses.  Completely vendor-independent, it is sponsored by HP Indigo, WhatTheyThink!, Digimarc, Delphax Solutions, Racami, Kodak, HYBRID Software and HP PageWide.

The PDF/VT Technical Working Group (TWG) is a collaborative organization of PDF software developers who use the TWG’s resources to share their knowledge and experience of PDF/VT technology in a vendor-neutral space.

Members of the PDF Association are entitled to participate in online and in-person PDF/VT TWG meetings, subscribe to the PDF/VT TWG listserv, access the PDF Association’s Jira, and gain other benefits as well.
