Tungsten Automation
Tungsten Automation helps enterprises turn unstructured documents into trusted, AI-ready data — making document-intensive processes faster, more accurate, more compliant, and easier to automate at scale. With roughly 40 years of experience in document processing and workflow automation, Tungsten Automation is trusted by more than 25,000 organizations worldwide, including many of the world’s most regulated businesses. Our technology supports critical document workflows across industries such as financial services, insurance, logistics, healthcare, government, legal, and manufacturing — wherever accuracy, auditability, security, and reliability matter.
Today, Tungsten Automation is advancing document intelligence through AI-powered automation. Our portfolio brings together intelligent document processing, process orchestration, knowledge discovery, generative AI, and secure content automation to help organizations transform documents, emails, forms, PDFs, scanned files, and other content sources into governed, compliant information that business systems and AI workflows can use with confidence.
This current DocAI story builds on a long-standing legacy in digital documents, OCR, capture, and PDF productivity. Many users still know parts of this portfolio under earlier company and product names, including Kofax, Nuance, and ScanSoft. That history is an important part of what Tungsten Automation brings to the PDF community.
The roots of our PDF and OCR expertise go back well before today’s AI-driven automation market. Caere Corporation, the company behind OmniPage, helped define the OCR software category. Visioneer contributed important document imaging and PaperPort technology. ScanSoft later brought these capabilities together, acquired Caere and then Nuance, and eventually adopted the Nuance name. ScanSoft first announced PDF Converter in 2003; the product line later became PDF Converter Professional and, under Nuance, evolved into Power PDF. Following Kofax’s acquisition of the Nuance Document Imaging division in 2019, Power PDF, OmniPage, PaperPort, eCopy, Equitrac, and SafeCom became part of the Kofax portfolio. Since the 2024 rebrand, these products have continued under the Tungsten Automation name.
This means Tungsten Power PDF is not a new entrant in the PDF market. It represents more than two decades of continuous PDF product development, with a lineage that connects ScanSoft PDF Converter, Nuance PDF Converter Professional, Nuance Power PDF, Kofax Power PDF, and today’s Tungsten Power PDF. The Power PDF brand itself has been in the market for more than a decade.
Tungsten Power PDF is a professional PDF solution for individuals, teams, and enterprises that need to create, convert, edit, annotate, secure, sign, collaborate on, and manage PDF documents without unnecessary complexity. It supports everyday document productivity as well as more demanding business requirements around accessibility, compliance, long-term usability, deployment flexibility, and secure information exchange.
Recent innovations extend Power PDF with browser-based editing, Microsoft 365 collaboration, generative AI capabilities, native Windows-on-ARM support, and enhanced accessibility features including support for PDF/UA and PDF/UA-2. Power PDF Business provides organizations with enterprise-ready licensing, deployment, and management options, including subscription-based SaaS editions for modern workplace environments.
Our commitment to PDF is also a commitment to open, reliable, and future-ready document standards. PDF is more than a file format: it is a critical layer of digital business infrastructure. It connects people, systems, processes, records, archives, and increasingly, AI-powered automation. Standards such as PDF/A, PDF/UA, PDF/E, PDF/X, and PDF 2.0 help ensure that documents remain trustworthy, accessible, interoperable, and usable across platforms, systems, and time.
As a full member of the PDF Association, Tungsten Automation supports the continued development, adoption, and practical application of ISO-standardized PDF technologies. We believe that trusted documents are essential to trusted automation. As enterprises move from traditional document workflows toward AI-enabled and agentic processes, the quality, structure, accessibility, and interoperability of the underlying PDF documents become even more important.
By combining our heritage in OCR, capture, imaging, PDF, and document workflow automation with our current innovation in DocAI and intelligent automation, Tungsten Automation helps organizations bridge the gap between trusted digital documents and the next generation of AI-ready business processes.
