ISO standards, test suites, best-practice guides…

The PDF Association publishes a variety of documents and other resources for those interested in leveraging PDF technology, and as of Q4 2021, also sells the ISO standards relating to PDF technology as developed by ISO TC 171 SC 2.

In addition to formal ISO standards many PDF Association publications developed through our publications process are freely available.

PDF Association members may access process documents and drafts of upcoming ISO standards via the Member Area.

ISO 32000 (PDF)

PDF 2.0

ISO 32000 is the family of ISO standards that defines the core PDF specification for both PDF 1.7 and PDF 2.0.

ISO/TS 32002

ISO/TS 32002 is a PDF 2.0 extension specification that adds support for NIST-P, Brainpool, Edwards Curve (EdDSA) Ed448 and Ed25519 families of elliptical curves for digital signatures.

ISO 18565 and ISO 22550 (AFP)

Together, ISO 18565 and ISO 22550 define an interchange of AFP (Advanced Function Presentation) to PDF and a subset for the archival of AFP documents.

ISO/TS 32001

ISO/TS 32001 specifies how to extend PDF 2.0 by adding support for the use of the Secure Hash Algorithm – 3 (SHA-3) and SHAKE256 hash algorithms.

ISO 32000 (PDF)

ISO 32000 is the family of ISO standards that defines the core PDF specification for both PDF 1.7 and PDF 2.0.

PDF 3D Formats

PDF 1.7 introduced interactive 3D support using the U3D file format. PDF 2.0 expanded 3D support to include the ISO PRC format, and an ISO extension will soon be published supporting STEP (AP242) 3D models.

ISO 16684 (XMP)

ISO 16684 is the ISO family of standards that defines XMP (eXtensible metadata platform) for XML-based metadata. XMP is widely used across PDF and other file formats, and is mandated by many ISO PDF subsets.

ISO 19444 (XFDF)

ISO 19444 specifies an XML format for representing forms data and annotations in ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0). It is the XML equivalent of FDF.

ISO 21757 (ECMAscript for PDF)

ISO 21757-1 defines the ECMAScript API for automating and interacting with the 2D and 3D content in PDF 2.0 documents.

ISO 23504 (PDF/R)

PDF/R defines a small subset of ISO 32000 suitable for storage, transport and exchange of multi-page raster-image (scanned) documents.

ISO 14289 (PDF/UA)

ISO 14289 (PDF/UA) defines the use of tagged PDF providing a mechanism for reuse of PDF page content, especially in the accessibility context.
