Brotli compression coming to PDF

In October 2023, the PDF Association launched a public request for stakeholder feedback on aspects of PDF that could be usefully updated.

We explored various subjects at that event, including HDR, new color capabilities, new font technology, animation, accessibility, new 2D and 3D graphical formats, and improved compression methods. Although several of these are under active development today in the PDF Association’s Imaging Model TWG, this article deals with a new method for optimizing PDF file size.

Brotli, a compression algorithm developed by Google engineers, was originally intended for web use, and is broadly adopted in web browsers. When implemented in PDF Brotli compression can offer significant reductions in file-size. Learn more!
