About PDF Association staff

In April 2023, the PDF Association, sponsored by leading PDF technology companies, Adobe, Apryse, and Foxit, made the ISO standard that defines PDF – ISO 32000-2 – available at no cost.

The resulting ISO 32000-2 bundle includes PDF’s core specification and four ISO Technical Specification extensions to PDF, enabling modern cryptography and digital signature technologies in PDF 2.0. With tens of thousands of downloads since 2023, the PDF Association and its sponsors have successfully placed the latest and most up-to-date PDF specification into the hands of developers worldwide, helping improve interoperability and reduce malformed PDF files.

This edition of PDF 2.0 includes Errata Collection 3 (EC3) and is a complete replacement for the previous no-cost Errata Collection 2 (EC2) sponsored edition of ISO 32000-2:2020 (PDF 2.0) with the following features and benefits:

  • All updated documents are clearly identified on the cover page as “Errata Collection 3 – June 1, 2026”.
  • ISO-approved and industry-resolved errata corrections to ISO 32000-2:2020 up to June 1, 2026. A small subset of these errata will also be published in the forthcoming ISO amendment to ISO 32000-2:2020 (PDF 2.0) as those errata corrections are required by ISO/TS 32005 (and thus WTPDF and ISO 14289-2 (PDF/UA-2)) and the upcoming dated revisions of ISO 19005-4 (PDF/A-4) and ISO 15930-9 (PDF/X-6).
  • 356 total errata corrections implemented as 766 edits (many errata require multiple edits).
  • 655 of the 766 edits (86%, up from 54% in EC2) are approved by ISO TC 171 SC 2 WG 8 (the ISO working group responsible for ISO 32000), with the remaining 111 edits (14.5%) having been approved by various PDF Association technical working groups. Many errata that were industry-approved in Errata Collection 2 have now been approved by ISO.
  • 20 new / replacement pages. Some errata corrections are unsuited for markup annotations, such as new and corrected illustrations and new tables. These cases are provided as 20 additional pages appended to the original PDF, with navigation buttons to and from each appended page.
  • In the core PDF specification, the errata resolutions comprise:
    • 200 inserted text annotations
    • 322 replaced text
    • 124 sticky notes
    • 113 deleted text (strikethrough annotations)
    • 6 file attachments (no changes since Errata Collection 2)
  • The latest resolved errata included in Errata Collection 3 is Issue #742.
  • ISO TS 32001 and ISO TS 32002 errata corrections: Included in the sponsored ISO 32000 bundle are updated ISO TS 32001:2022 (Extensions to Hash Algorithm Support in ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0)) and ISO TS 32002:2022 (Extensions to Digital Signatures in ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0)). Other sponsored ISO publications are unchanged since Errata Collection 2.
  • Updated Arlington PDF Model. This resource is actively maintained to reflect all errata corrections and represents the most up-to-date definition of PDF in machine-readable form.
  • Navigation enhancements. Page labels match ISO’s page identifiers, with all new pages bookmarked.

An instructions page clarifies usage and locations for further updates and information.

You’ll need a capable PDF viewer

Capable PDF viewers are necessary for the use of these PDF files, which make extensive use of annotations. Using a viewer that does not support annotations may cause the reader to miss one or more errata corrections.

Viewers must support, at a minimum, PDF markup and file attachment annotations. Depending on the PDF viewer, it may be necessary to enable a “Comment” or similarly-named pane or window in order to make the markup visible.

Each errata correction includes one or more GitHub Issue numbers that reference the original errata and background discussions preceding their resolution in the respective PDF Association GitHub repository.

The respective approval body is indicated using a status value of either Completed or Accepted. The status is shown using different icons and colors depending on the PDF viewer.

Page labels

Based on feedback from users, starting with EC2 the document’s Page Labels (ISO 32000-2:2020, 12.4.2) are corrected by the PDF Association such that page navigation now matches the page indicators used on the footer of all ISO pages:

  • The PDF Association’s cover pages are labeled “Cover-A” and “Cover-B”.
  • The ISO front matter (ISO cover page, Foreword and Introduction clauses) uses lowercase Roman numerals from “i” to “xiii” inclusive.
  • Clause 1 “Scope”, the main body of the ISO specification, is labeled as page 1; this page and all subsequent ISO pages are numbered with matching Arabic numerals from 1 to 1,003.
  • The appended errata pages added for Errata Collection 3 are separately identified as “Errata-n” where n is an Arabic number 1 to 20 inclusive.

When using capable viewers, such as those provided by the sponsors, entering these page labels will now navigate to the expected ISO page, avoiding confusion between physical pages and the logical page as indicated in the ISO footer.
