Introduction

On small screens of mobile devices, it can be challenging for users to read PDF documents with many small elements such as text and images. Constantly zooming in and out to view the details of the document becomes inconvenient and cumbersome. WPS Office PDF offers a reflow reading mode that reorganizes the layout of text, table of contents, images, tables, and other objects in the original document, providing an excellent reading experience on mobile devices.

Compared to traditional regular reading mode, reflow mode has the following advantages:

  • Preserves the font style, multi-level headings, relative positioning, and hyperlink navigation of the original document, enhancing the reading experience without altering the structure.
  • Supports adjustments for font size, line spacing, reading background color, and page-turning mode, offering users an immersive reading experience with comprehensive functionality.
  • Supports formatting of various annotation types such as highlights, underlines, and shapes, catering to a wider range of needs.
  • Handles complex content by rearranging and converting it into images, ensuring readability and expanding the scope of compatibility, thus improving reading efficiency.

1. Reflow mode

Clicking on the entry will take you to the screen adaptation reading mode, where the system recognizes and traverses all page elements in the entire document, including text, table of contents, images, tables, annotations, and more. After obtaining all the elements, the content is re-formatted based on an algorithm. As shown in the figure, compared to the original document, the reflow mode reorganizes the layout of text, images, and other information, providing a smoother reading experience that is more suitable for small-screen reading scenarios such as mobile devices.

2. Text reflow

The reflow mode automatically adjusts the font size according to the original document. As shown in the figure, the reflow mode preserves the font style, multi-level headings, and relative positioning of the original document, enhancing the reading experience without altering the structure of the original document. For a table of contents, the reflow mode effectively retains the structure of the original document's table of contents. If the original document's table of contents supports clickable links, the reflow mode still supports these links.

As shown in the figure, it also provides settings for adjusting font size, spacing, and reading background color. Users can manually change the font size, spacing, and eye protection color according to the diversity of the document and personal preferences, adjusting to the most suitable reading style. The reflow mode offers two page-turning modes: horizontal and vertical. For the vertical mode, in order to maintain the page concept of the original document, a dividing line is added and concatenated between different pages to ensure the coherence of document reading. For the horizontal mode, different pages are not concatenated to maintain a sense of pause during reading. These two reading modes meet the reading needs in different scenarios.

3. Picture reflow

As shown in the figure, the reflow mode supports detailed viewing of images. Double-clicking or long-pressing will enter the image preview mode. It supports zooming in to view a single image, and swiping left or right can switch to view other images in the document. Clicking on "multiple selections" allows you to directly obtain all the images in the current document, enabling quick navigation and browsing.

For complex elements in the original document, such as complex tables that are not suitable for reformatting, they are processed into images in the reflow mode. Users can view the images to obtain information from complex pages.

4. Table reflow

As shown in the figure, the relatively simple tables can be directly reformatted in the reflow mode to meet reading needs. However, for complex tables, even after reformatting, it may still be difficult to read the table content. In the reflow mode, these complex tables are converted into images and support zooming in for preview.

5. Annotation reflow

As shown in the figure, the reflow mode supports the reformatting of various annotation types, such as brush, highlight, shape, underline, strikethrough, stamp, signature, and text annotation. Through algorithm recognition, the annotations are kept aligned with the document content, ensuring their readability in the screen adaptation mode. Under the reflow mode, the annotations added to the content will be restored to their original positions in the PDF document.

6. Summary and outlook

Summary

After being launched, the reflow mode feature has undergone multiple technological iterations and experience optimizations, making it the most widely used feature in WPS Office PDF. With its powerful technical capabilities and excellent user experience, the reflow reading mode has received deep recognition from users.

Future outlook

On the one hand, reflow mode will further enhance the rearrangement effect of existing text, mixed text and images, tables, and annotated articles; on the other hand, complex articles such as CAD drawings, scans, newspapers, and periodicals will be gradually captured. We will also conduct an in-depth exploration of specific scenarios such as test papers, resumes, and PPTs to further improve our technical capabilities and provide users with a better reading experience.
