“Requirements for Archiving Email using PDF” draft report now available for comment
The PDF Association staff delivers a vendor-neutral platform in service of PDF’s stakeholders.
As we covered last year, the Task Force on Technical Approaches to Email Archives is an initiative jointly sponsored by the Mellon Foundation and the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC).
Following the Task Force’s initial report the University of Illinois was awarded a grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop conversion criteria and requirements for archiving email into PDF containers.
The draft report, Requirements for Archiving Email using PDF, is now available for comment.
These recommendations are intended as a framework within which interested people from the archives, digital preservation, and PDF communities can collaborate. The hope is to develop a technically detailed specification and implementation reference model for archiving email using PDF technology using the requirements outlined here as a starting point. Ultimately, the Task Force seeks to describe how advanced PDF-based capture, preservation, rendering, and distribution options for email can deliver long-term value to organizations, communities, and everyday users.
The task force is co-chaired by Chris Prom (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Kate Murray (Library of Congress) and features a panel of international experts, including members of the PDF Association.
