3D PDF TWG

Background

The original industry working groups dedicated to 3D PDF and PDF in manufacturing were operated by the 3D PDF Consortium, which merged with the PDF Association in 2019.

Objective

The 3D PDF Technical Working Group (TWG) is where PDF Association members focus on specifications and guidance for implementing 3D PDF technology.

Specific areas in which we plan to invest:

• Best practices and resolving ambiguities for implementing PRC in PDF
• Advancing development of STEP in PDF
• Monitor and assist in the development of glTF in PDF
• JavaScript for controlling 3D objects in the PDF context
• Operate the 3D PDF Implementor Forum to assist industry in meeting the user requirements generated in the 3D PDF Users LWG.

Status

As of Q4 2025 key subjects currently under discussion include, but are not limited to:

• Validation properties for 3D
• Javascript alternatives
• Coordination with the multimedia working group
• ISO 14739 (PRC)

How to participate in the Working Group

It’s possible to participate in the Working Group without attending meetings!

• The Working Group’s activities are centered on a private GitHub repository.
• Working group members may attend the working group’s online meetings – currently monthly on the first Wednesday of the month, 1605–1700 CET / 1005–1100 ET / 0705–0800 PT, or review meeting notes and recordings of previous calls.

The 3D PDF TWG is open to all PDF Association Individual, Division, Full, Partner and Institutional members.

• Access the working group’s private Google Drive area with working documents
• Participate via the mailing list and view mailing list archives
• Participate in the approval and publication process
• Access meeting recordings and notes
• Access and provide comments on related ISO documents
